Color, Cuts and Contour Delineations
February 5 - March 28, 2021
5 Points Art Gallery + Studios opens its 2021 exhibition season offering a departure from isolation and the bleak winter backdrop with personal stories through chimerical compositions exploiting color and reconfiguring the concept of linearity. In Color, Cuts and Contour Delineations the idiosyncratic works by Anwar Floyd-Pruitt (Madison, WI), Spencer Hutchinson (Chicago, IL), and Theda Sandiford’s (Jersey City, NJ) give life and demonstrate limitless possibility.
Utilizing 100-foot extensions of rope, twine, and yarn impeccably wrapped, woven, tied and embellished with recycled beads, ribbon, lace, tape and bottle cap bobbles, Theda Sandiford allures you into her hue-imbued, enmeshed installations symbolizing natural hair. Sandiford’s bold albeit whimsically twisted and locked forms gingerly invite the audience into off-the-wall conversations about micro aggressions against black women and their hair. Wielding simply expressive monochromatic lines meticulously painted over large minimal backdrops, Spencer Hutchinson takes the viewer back to the basics of color, form, and gesture and strips his hypnotically repetitive marks of hierarchy.
Dissolving boundaries and implying a continuation beyond the restrained four corners of the canvas, Hutchinson’s work suggests that an infinite, harmonious existence comes from finding equality within diversity. Diving more into the personal, Anwar Floyd-Pruitt’s neon-palette, mixed-media, laser cut collages on paper reveal raw and layered moods and visages of himself. With sprayed stencil markings forming backgrounds of modern graffiti-styled tapestry beneath overlaid tears of paper and precision-cut cardboard contours, Floyd-Pruitt’s compositions sink you into multiple iterations of his playful psyche.
You can entangle yourself in the distinguished yet relatable personal narratives of Color, Cuts and Contour Delineations from February 5, 2021 until March 28, 2021.
