Don't Call It A Comeback
April 9 - May 30, 2021
Acknowledging being the in midst of extremely fleeting times, 5 Points Art Gallery + Studios’ Spring ’21 exhibition schedule opens giving reverence to three artists whose enduring and trailblazing art practices deftly defy ageism plaguing our society. Applying at least 40 years of technique and dedication to their respective disciplines, Don’t Call It A Comeback, featuring the distinctive and refined bodies of work by artists and educators Darrel M. Payne (Milwaukee, WI), Marianita Porterfield (Gary, IN), and Anne Bouie (Washington D.C.) is a testament to the symbiotic relationship between talent enhanced through time leading to mastery.
His work being no stranger to 5 Points Art Gallery + Studios, ceramist and professor, Darrel M. Payne, deviates from his signature distressed lineal-rooted ceramic masks with a whole new array of uniquely contoured sculptures, vessels, and vases demonstrating the perfect balance between utility and elegance.
Marianita Porterfield, grandmother to CBS 58 (Milwaukee) news anchor, Amanda Porterfield, has produced her own lineage of familial and professional excellence. As reclamation from a former fashion career dream deferred, Porterfield’s delicately tactile, brilliantly-hued and alluring woven abstract fiber works laud her love of textiles, texture, and form.
A resilient self-taught artist turned griot and spiritual guide for future artists, Anne Bouie’s sculptural assemblages breathe new life into found and repurposed materials manifested as sacred African and Native ancestral shields and totems. These rustic yet majestic works connect the metaphysical past with the present and serve to equally honor and preserve the histories of said communities.
Lessons of living and art are shared by these masterful practitioners from April 9 to May 30, 2021.
