Of Rites & Other Stories + Children Of Onan
November 8 - December 24, 2019
In this adjunct, dual-project solo exhibition, Of Rites & Other Stories and Children of Onan, Cuban artist, Yanahara Mauri Villarreal, reveals humanizing and naturalizing visual narrations surrounding sexual identity and sexuality for women.
Of Rites & Other Stories documents, photographically and via recorded interviews, six women’s aesthetic and physical gender transformations within their culture of staunch masculine and feminine roles and identities.
Creating an alternate narrative about biblical character, Onan, inadvertantly having offspring from his forced affair with his widowed sister-in-law, Children of Onan is a photographic exposé of Onan’s sexually deviant children, born of his sinful and unsuccessful masturbation attempt with Tamar.
The photographic stories Of Rites & Other Stories and Children of Onan are on display until December 24, 2019.
