Yo Soy Habana
November 8 - December 24, 2019
Alain Cabrera Fernandez
Highlighting the sesquicentennial (500th year anniversary) of an equally rich, rough, and resilient history from a city that was once the resource-bountiful, luxuriant art-deco playground to America’s elite, but now exploited, politically-embargoed and vilified, 5 Points Art Gallery & Studios presents two all-Cuban, all-photography art exhibitions, with first-person visual narrations of the social, political, and the human experience in and in remembrance of Havana, Cuba. Yo Soy Habana, a three-person showcase featuring national and international photographic works by Yanahara Mauri Villarreal, Alain Cabrera Fernandez, and Liliet Rosa Reyes and Of Rites & Other Stories a spin-off solo exhibition of Villarreal’s works, open November 8, 2019. Friday, November 8, 2019 from 6-9 p.m.
Yo Soy Habana a 3-artist photographic compilation including work by Yanahara Mauri Villarreal (Havana, Cuba), Alain Cabrera Fernandez (Havana, Cuba), and Liliet Rosa Reyes (New York, NY), touches on themes of national politics, displacement amongst the rise in tourism in Havana and Cuba at large, ancestry, sexuality and sexual identity, and establishing racial and cultural identity in a foreign landscape. This is Villarreal’s first and Fernandez’s second exhibition in the United States. Villarreal’s adjunct solo exhibition, Of Rites & Other Stories documents, photographically and via recorded interviews, six women’s aesthetic and physical gender transformations within their culture of staunch masculine and feminine roles and identities.
Come celebrate longevity, diversity and entrench yourself in the humanity, pride, and spirit of these dynamic photograph documentaries sans propaganda.
Havana’s official 500th anniversary is November 16, 2019.
Yo Soy Habana and Of Rites & Other Stories are on display until December 24, 2019.
